Types of Resources
Your search will be easier if you know the types of resources
Catalogs (e.g. Allecat, WorldCat)
- Have Records of books, videos, journals
- Tell you what is owned and (locally) where it is shelved
- May have links to electronic books, files, etc.
- DO NOT have full text
- DO NOT have journal article information
Indexes (e.g. PsycInfo, Web of Science)
- Usually focus on one subject area
- Intend to cover everything substantial in that subject
- Always cover journal articles
- May include books, theses, conferences
- May include some full text of articles
- Often have links to Allegheny full text or print holdings
- Broad-subject indexes often include non-scholarly sources
Journal Databases (e.g., JStor, ScienceDirect)
- Usually publisher-specific (e.g. Springerlink, Elsevier ScienceDirect)
- NOT comprehensive coverage for any subject
- May include ebooks if the publisher has them and we have bought them
- Are best approached through indexes, not directly
Resource Collections (e.g. MergenTOnline, CIAO)
- Concentrate on a very specific topic or need
- Provide full text and/or data on the subject
- May incorporate a variety of formats (articles, blogs, conferences)
- Self-contained; seldom intended to lead to outside sources
- These resources are cataloged in Allecat and listed in Databases A-to-Z

Worldcat indexes books, videos, websites, audioCDs, dissertations -- in fact almost all items published throughout the world. Use Worldcat for exhaustive searches when you have already narrowed your search strategy. WE CAN GET MANY OF THE MATERIALS ON WORLDCAT OVER INTERLIBRARY LOAN ILL), BUT NOT ALL.
