Types of Resources

Your search will be easier if you know the types of resources

Catalogs (e.g. Allecat, WorldCat)

  • Have Records of books, videos, journals
  • Tell you what is owned and (locally) where it is shelved
  • May have links to electronic books, files, etc.
  • DO NOT have full text
  • DO NOT have journal article information

Indexes (e.g. PsycInfo, Web of Science)

  • Usually focus on one subject area
  • Intend to cover everything substantial in that subject
  • Always cover journal articles
  • May include books, theses, conferences
  • May include some full text of articles
  • Often have links to Allegheny full text or print holdings
  • Broad-subject indexes often include non-scholarly sources

Journal Databases (e.g., JStor, ScienceDirect)

  • Usually publisher-specific (e.g. Springerlink, Elsevier ScienceDirect)
  • NOT comprehensive coverage for any subject
  • May include ebooks if the publisher has them and we have bought them
  • Are best approached through indexes, not directly

Resource Collections (e.g. MergenTOnline, CIAO)

  • Concentrate on a very specific topic or need
  • Provide full text and/or data on the subject
  • May incorporate a variety of formats (articles, blogs, conferences)
  • Self-contained; seldom intended to lead to outside sources
  • These resources are cataloged in Allecat and listed in Databases A-to-Z
