FS 101: Musical Synthesis

Assignment: Identify a significant issue that relates the arts to society.
Use resources that you learn about during our library session to find information about the issue, and prepare a two-page paper in which you define the issue, state why it is of social significance, and provide some background information on the issue.
It is not necessary at this point to argue one point over another. Rather, use this paper to define the relative and possibly competing viewpoints.

How to Find Books at Pelletier Library and Beyond!
The online Catalog for Pelletier Library is called Allecat
Start out with key word searches, using the suggestions for improving your search.
Some examples:
art and society
music and society
literature and society
As you experiment, look for the subject headings that are assigned to titles that interest you.
Sex Role in Music
Street Art
Music in Advertising
Politics and Literature
Select relevant titles. You may create a list using the bookcart/view saved feature if you wish.
Locate and browse selected titles. They may be ebooks or physical books. If needed, go back to Allecat to do a new search using new terms. Always feel free to ask a reference librarian or your professor for help is you feel you are stuck.
Improve your search results
Quotation Marks searches for the exact phrase:
"rhythm and blues"
Truncation searches for all variant endings of your keyword:
music* will find music, musician, musicians, musical, etc.
Boolean Operators
Or -- searches will have either of your keywords:
poetry or verse
And -- searches must have both of your keywords:
jazz and fiction*
And (Or) -- searches will have combinations of keywords:
television and (noir or dark or suspense)
